Description: The hood doors are open, and so are the control panels in the cab. That's usually evidence of parts getting grabbed for other equipment. This engine will get many new parts, when it eventually gets rebuilt for service. - see previous image for the history of this engine

UP 2755, ex-SP8679, ex HLCX 3166, ex-SOU 3166

Description: This engine has been around the bend, several times. It was built in 1970, as SOUTHERN #3166 (high-hood SD45), then wore an HLC(HLCX) patch for awhile. After that, it ceased being an SD45. The M K rebuild program gave it a new life(and a new prime mover-1994) as an SD40M-2, which is when it became SP #8679. That's the last time it ever looked like a new engine. Acquired and patched, it apparently worked all over the U.P. system. So, now it's sitting in Denver, with it's paint still peeling away(since its SP days), and presently being abused by the spray painting punks, but don't despair, this engine's good days are still coming. Most likely, it will be sent to Little Rock, and rebuilt for UP service.

Description: Technically, this is an EMD unit, although it's been a long time since it was actually an EMD switcher for the Missouri Pacific. Now it sits in Denver after serving many years in the yard, probably with a pair of MP15's. The MoPac built these in Little Rock back in the 80's, but as for the original switcher from which it was constructed, I have no idea. I think they shortened the frame. I usually close the hood doors for pictures...sorry about that

Description: After spending an afternoon in Napa with my family we began to head back, and found this off SR-12. The story of the NWP is one of conflict, irony and despair. In its modern times the NWP has been treated a stepchild in the communities that it once proudly served. The unit I'm standing on was one of many SD9s that are permanently stuck on this railroad. The NWP last run in the late 1990s at its full capacity and trailed off til 2000 when it was killed permanently. Its said to been reopened for a project called SMART, which has plans similar to NCTD's SPRINTER in southern California - that has yet to bear any fruit. http://nwprrhs.org/history.htm

Description: The Canadian Pacific #2816 "Empress" was refitted a number of years a go as a heritage project. The steamer is still in service to some degree for private charters and the odd road trip open to the public. The "Empress" chugged past my back yard on it's way to the Crowsnest Pass of The Rocky Mountains, crossing the continental divide into Alberta. Although the "Empress" was in the lead of the consist, additional power was provided by an F7a unit to assist with the long climb ahead.

Description: Often, train photos are taken from a distance in order to capture a good portion of the train and the surrounding scenery. I do that, too. But, on this occasion, I grabbed this photo as #8711 slowly rolled by on it's way to one of the four coal mines north of our locale. When I look at how puny the engineer appears to be in relationship to the size of the locomotive, I am awestruck by the majesty of these giant machines! I took this photo near the Track Supervisor's office in Sparwood, British Columbia, Canada.
